Climate Models Fail the Reality Test: Sea Levels Higher Than Forecast, But Where’s the Flooding?

A curious story has emerged from the pages of the Financial Times: sea levels along many coastlines are already at heights that climate models predicted wouldn’t arrive for decades. Yet the flooding disasters forecasted for these future scenarios haven’t materialised. Rather than questioning the models’ predictive reliability, mainstream media are framing this as cause for greater alarm.

The revelation comes from research at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, published in Nature. Scientists discovered that actual sea level measurements are consistently higher than the estimates used in coastal planning, in some regions by as much as one to 1.5 metres. The gap is particularly pronounced across Southeast Asia and Oceania, where communities have supposedly been sitting at “future crisis” levels for years without experiencing the projected catastrophe.

The response from climate research institutions has been predictable: if reality doesn’t match the models, reality must be more dangerous than we thought.

The Circular Logic of Climate Modelling

Here lies the heart of the matter. Coastal planning across the world has relied on something called Geoid model estimates to predict sea levels and land elevation. These models, like all computational forecasts, can only produce results as accurate as the data and assumptions fed into them. When researchers compared these estimates with direct measurements, they found the models had been wrong from the start, consistently underestimating actual sea levels.

The logical conclusion should be straightforward: if coastal communities are already at sea levels projected to cause serious problems in the future, and those problems haven’t manifested, then the projections about future impacts are likely flawed. Instead, the study’s lead researcher warned that impacts from sea level rise “will happen sooner than projected before.”

This reasoning collapses under its own weight. How can disasters arrive sooner when we’re already living at the supposedly disastrous levels without experiencing them?

The dynamic reveals something deeper than mere scientific miscalculation. It exposes a pattern where models and projections take precedence over observable reality. When measurements don’t align with predictions, rather than questioning the predictions, authorities double down on the narrative of impending crisis.

The Timescale Sleight of Hand

Anders Levermann from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research contributed his perspective, forecasting that “eventually” sea levels will rise by three to four metres. He acknowledges that average sea levels have risen only about 20 centimetres (roughly seven inches) over the past century.

That word “eventually” deserves scrutiny. In this context, it refers to timescales of 1,000 to 2,000 years. Presenting millennial projections as immediate policy imperatives represents a fundamental disconnect between scientific timescales and human planning horizons.

Consider what this means: we’re being asked to make radical economic and social changes now based on models that have already proven unreliable, to address problems projected to unfold over a period spanning 40 to 80 human generations. No computational model can meaningfully predict conditions that far into the future, across countless variables including technological advancement, geological shifts, and natural climate cycles.

Within such vast timescales, the Earth could easily enter another glacial cycle. Solar patterns shift. Tectonic activity continues reshaping coastlines. Human civilisation itself will transform beyond recognition. The hubris of claiming predictive accuracy across such distances of time borders on absurdity.

What the Tide Gauges Actually Show

Away from satellite data and complex models, direct tide gauge measurements tell a more grounded story. These physical instruments show no acceleration in recent rates of sea level rise. The measured increase of 15 to 20 centimetres per century represents gradual change, not catastrophe.

This matters because it grounds the conversation in observable physical reality rather than computational projections. Tide gauges don’t rely on algorithms or assumptions. They simply measure water levels over time.

The divergence between satellite calculations and tide gauge readings should itself prompt questions about which data sources we trust and why. Yet such questions rarely enter mainstream climate discourse, which tends to favour whichever data set supports the more alarming narrative.

The Real Story Here

This episode illuminates something the awakened have long understood: institutional narratives often serve purposes beyond the pursuit of truth. When observable reality contradicts dire predictions, and the response is to amplify rather than reconsider those predictions, we’re witnessing something other than dispassionate scientific inquiry.

The communities living at these supposedly crisis-level sea levels are adapting, building, thriving. Their lived experience matters more than any model. Human beings have always inhabited coastlines, adjusted to changing waters, and developed resilience in the face of gradual environmental shifts.

Perhaps the most revealing aspect of this story is what remains unquestioned in mainstream coverage: the assumption that any climate change is inherently catastrophic, that human adaptation is impossible, and that only dramatic intervention from centralised authorities can save us. These assumptions themselves deserve examination.

The Earth’s climate has never been static. Coastlines have always been dynamic. Human civilisation has consistently proven more adaptable and innovative than centralised planners give it credit for. When models fail to match reality, the honest response is humility, not amplified alarm.
