Freeman Dyson: A Perspective on CO2 and Climate Change (2015)

When it comes to climate change, there’s no shortage of alarm bells ringing. But what if some of those concerns were misdirected or, at the very least, overestimated? Freeman Dyson, a renowned physicist and mathematician, wasn’t afraid to challenge the mainstream narrative. His stance, though controversial, forces us to rethink our understanding of carbon dioxide (CO2) and its impact on our planet.

In a 2015 interview, Dyson, then 91 years old and as sharp as ever, presented a view many may find surprising: while man-made climate change is real, its impacts might not be as catastrophic as predicted. In fact, he argued that the increase in CO2 levels has actually had a positive effect on the Earth by making it greener. His claim was bold: as CO2 has risen, agricultural yields have increased, forests have expanded, and biodiversity has been preserved. According to Dyson, this ecological boost is more significant than the climatic changes we are constantly warned about.

What’s striking is the evidence Dyson cited. He referred to satellite data showing a greener planet, the result of CO2 acting as a fertiliser for plant life. This “greening” effect, he argued, has improved food production and biodiversity globally. For Dyson, these benefits far outweigh the uncertainties surrounding climate predictions.

But Dyson didn’t stop there. He also questioned the reliability of climate models, tools heavily relied upon by scientists to forecast future conditions. While these models have advanced our understanding of climate systems, Dyson emphasised that they fall short in predicting long-term changes. The reason, he said, is simple: the real world is far more complex than any model can capture. He drew on the words of Suki Manabe, a pioneer in climate modelling, who stated that while models are great for understanding climate dynamics, they are poor predictors of future outcomes.

And then there’s the sun. Dyson pointed out that many climate scientists downplay the influence of solar activity on Earth’s climate. While the sun’s temperature may not fluctuate much, its magnetic storms and sunspots do, and these, according to Dyson, have a measurable impact on our climate. He referenced the Little Ice Age in the 17th century, a time when sunspot activity nearly ceased, coinciding with a dramatic cooling period in Europe. This connection, Dyson argued, shows that solar influences cannot be dismissed in climate discussions.

Of course, Dyson’s views weren’t without their detractors. His suggestion that rising CO2 levels are “on the whole good” was bound to ruffle feathers, especially among those who see climate change as the greatest existential threat of our time. Yet Dyson welcomed this controversy. He championed science as a tool for rebellion and urged young scientists to challenge prevailing ideas. He even described the climate change debate as having become a “religion,” where dissenters are treated as heretics.

While many may not agree with Dyson’s conclusions, his perspective serves as a reminder that science is rarely settled. The climate is undoubtedly changing, and human activity plays a role. But how much? And is it all bad? Dyson believed these questions are far from resolved.

At the heart of Dyson’s argument is a call for balance. Yes, we must be cautious about climate change, but we should also recognise the undeniable benefits of CO2. The world has grown greener, and with that greening comes more food, more forests, and more life. It’s a perspective that challenges us to look beyond the models and predictions and consider the observable evidence before us.
