Robert Monroe spent fifty years turning the far reaches of consciousness into a set of coordinates anyone can learn to reach, from mind awake and body asleep to the edge of the galaxy. Here is the whole map: Focus 10 to Focus 49, and what each state is actually for.
The Focus levels are coordinates, not a ladder
Most accounts of higher consciousness ask you to simply accept them on faith. You read the description, you nod, or you don’t, and nothing in your own experience is required to change. Robert Monroe built something that works the other way round. His Focus levels are not doctrines; they are instead states you enter, hold, and check against your own perception, and the whole architecture is designed so that what begins as an idea can become something you feel directly.
Monroe did not set out to build a system at first. In the late 1950s, he began having spontaneous out-of-body experiences, complete with a roaring sound and a current of energy running through his body, and he went looking for a medical explanation but couldn’t find one. What he found instead was that specific sound frequencies could guide awareness into consistent, repeatable states. Play a tone of one pitch in one ear, and a slightly different pitch in the other, and the brain produces a third rhythm at the difference between them (what we now call binaural beats). From that simple effect grew Hemi-Sync, the Gateway programme, and a research institute that has now spent more than fifty years mapping the terrain.
The word to hold onto is coordinates. A Focus level is not a place you travel to, and it is not a rung on a ladder to somewhere higher. It is a reference point in consciousness, a particular quality of awareness that can be repeatedly found because it has a stable signature. The numbers are simply labels, a shared language so that one explorer can describe to another where they have been, just as your address marks your home and not your neighbour’s. There is also no hidden Focus 13 or Focus 30 waiting to be discovered.
So, here are the focus levels and what they are all about.
Focus 10: Mind awake, body asleep
Everything starts here. Focus 10 is the state Monroe explorers call mind awake, body asleep: the body sinks into rest so deep it is effectively asleep, while awareness stays fully awake. In brainwave terms, it runs on dominant theta and delta rhythms, bridged by gentle alpha. Some people feel a floating sensation or a current moving through the body. Others notice time beginning to distort, or space seeming to widen. What matters is that the conscious mind stays awake and aware while the body drops away.
The realisation that arrives with it is short and consequential: I am more than my physical body. Focus 10 is the doorway to every other level, the ground you return to before going further. On its own, it lowers the heart rate, quietens the stress response, and sharpens intuition and creativity, which is why many practitioners would value it even if it led nowhere else. It does, however, lead everywhere else.
Focus 12, 15 and 18: Expanding perception
From the foundation of Focus 10, awareness begins to stretch.
Focus 12 is expanded awareness beyond the five senses. Here, communication turns non-verbal: images, colours, a wave of warmth, a shift in atmosphere that carries its own meaning. Theta activity rises, the brain starts weaving together material from conscious and subconscious layers, and insight arrives as symbol and sensation rather than as argument. It is the state explorers use for decision-making, creative problem-solving, and asking a question, then waiting for the answer to surface, sometimes in the session, sometimes days later. Remote viewing, the disciplined perception of a distant person or place, is built on this same pairing of Focus 10 and Focus 12: quieten the mind first, then receive raw impressions without the conscious mind rushing to name them.
Focus 15 goes further still, into what Monroe called No-Time. Explorers describe it as the void, a nurturing blackness, a star-filled vastness, an infinite now. It is not emptiness in the barren sense but pure potential, the state many contemplative traditions point to when they speak of luminous stillness. The image the Institute uses is a wagon wheel: Focus 15 is the hub, and from it you can travel down any spoke to a moment in linear time, to heal it, to learn from it, or to dissolve a pattern that no longer serves you. Creation is easy for most of us. It is the un-making, the letting go, that we find hard, and Focus 15 is where that work becomes possible.
I stumbled across Focus 12 & 15 many years ago without knowing their names, and often use this receptive state to help with problem-solving to great effect.
Focus 18 is the heart space, a state of coherent emotion. As the system settles into coherence, the breath deepens, the face softens, and the past can be approached without fear. Monroe programmes such as Heartline and MC² use this state for healing old wounds and for directing intention outward, sometimes into measurable effects on physical matter. The common report is simple: harmony, an open heart, a felt connection to oneself and to others.
Focus 21: The bridge between worlds
Monroe called Focus 21 the line of demarcation. On one side sits the physical world, the here. On the other sits the non-physical, the there. Focus 21 is the bridge between them, the point where awareness begins to operate independently of the body and where contact with non-physical consciousness becomes possible.
For many explorers, it feels social. It is where they report meeting deceased loved ones, reaching a guide, or encountering intelligences that were never human at all. One long-time explorer described merging with whale consciousness and finding it ancient and intelligent in a way he had not expected. The state is often experienced as a transport hub, a launch point with departures in many directions, both down toward the human afterlife regions and up toward the wider cosmos. Its most reliable effect is the quiet dissolution of the fear of death, because continuity stops being a belief and becomes something the explorer has touched.
Focus 22 to 27: The afterlife territories
Beyond the bridge, Monroe mapped a series of regions that people move through after physical death and that trained explorers can visit while still alive.
Focus 22 is a chaotic borderland, close enough to human life that ordinary thoughts leak into it: the territory of comas, deep dreams, and delirium. Focus 23 is where the newly dead first arrive, and where some become confused or stuck, unaware of their own death or unable to release their ties to a life or a place. These are the ones folklore calls ghosts. Focus 24, 25 and 26 are the belief system territories, where people are drawn by the beliefs they held while alive and gather with others who share them. None of these is permanent. They are way-stations, and the environments there are strongly thought-responsive, so a person can quite literally furnish their own surroundings, whether that’s a beach, a cabin, or a fishing spot, simply by willing it. In time, most inhabitants begin to question the limits of what they have made, exactly as we do here, and move on.
Focus 27 is the Park, and it is the richest region on the map. Monroe described it as a stable hub between lives, an environment often built to resemble Earth so the newly arrived feel at ease. Pick a blade of grass there, one explorer reported, and you can taste its bitterness. It organises into functions: a reception area, a healing centre where the emotional and energetic residue of a lifetime is released, a learning centre where a soul reviews its life through the eyes and feelings of everyone it affected and draws on something like a cosmic library, and a planning centre where the shape of a next life can be considered. Monroe went further and described a coordinating intelligence at work here, and a two-way exchange between Focus 27 and the Earth itself, understood as a conscious, evolving being.
This is also the ground of the Lifeline programme and its practice of retrieval. Retrieval runs in two directions: helping a stuck soul move on, and recovering the fragmented parts of oneself that trauma or fear once cut off. Often the two turn out to be the same act. You go to help another and find you were reclaiming a lost piece of yourself.
Focus 34/35, 42 and 49: Beyond the human system
Here, the map opens past anything specifically human.
Focus 34/35 is known as the Gathering. Monroe was drawn in meditation to an expansive field of energy and perceived it as an assembly of non-human intelligences, many species gathered to witness Earth at a pivotal moment in its development. This is also where he met what he called the I-There: his own larger self, a collection of thousands of life expressions across time and space, some human, some never human, held together as one being. Other systems refer to this as the oversoul or the higher self. At this level, identity stops being organised around a single body and a single life.
Focus 42 widens the frame again. Monroe found his I-There bound to countless others, forming vast clusters, soul groups that incarnate together across many lives to help one another grow. In the Starlines programme, explorers journey in meditation to Sirius, the Pleiades, Arcturus and beyond, and the felt sense of self expands to include more and more beings.
Focus 49 is the widest reach, an apparently infinite sea of bonded clusters arranged like a honeycomb, with pathways toward what Monroe called the Great Emitter, the source. He once tried to travel that current and was stopped by a voice that asked what gifts he brought, then told him he could go no further because he had not yet gathered all of his parts. That phrase became a key to the whole system. In one sense, every Monroe programme exists to help a person gather their parts, to recover and integrate the scattered pieces of who they are.
Patterning: What the map is for
The last movement is not outward but returning home. Focus 49 is described as much a reintegration as an exploration, the point where the many streams of awareness converge again into one river. There is no loss of individuality in it, and no separation either. What comes back with the explorer is meant to be lived.
Monroe called the practice of living it patterning. Not visualising an outcome and hoping, but tuning your inner state, your thoughts, emotions and actions to the frequency of what you intend, and then acting as the person who already lives that reality. If you want peace, cultivate peace now. If you want to write, keep a writing schedule now. The outer world, in this understanding, answers the vibration you actually carry rather than the one you announce. Patterning is, in effect, a way to reprogram your subconscious to become the person you want to be now, instead of seeing it as a future version of you.
That is the quiet centre of the whole system. The point of travelling to the edge of the cosmos in meditation is to return to this life more whole, clearer, less afraid, and more useful to the people in front of you, rather than to escape it. The map runs from mind awake, body asleep all the way to the sea of clusters, but its destination is the ordinary morning you wake into next.
Each of these states has a guided meditation built to take you into it, using the same sound technology Monroe developed. The full sequence, all ten modules from Focus 10 to Focus 49, is gathered as a course on Gaia TV that you can work through at your own pace, with the audio doing the work of guiding your awareness while you simply explore. If reading the map has made you curious to walk it, that is where to begin.
