Excavations at a cave in central Israel have uncovered evidence that Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens were living side by side 110,000 years ago, burying their dead in identical rituals, collecting red ochre from sources over a hundred kilometres away, and sharing the same sophisticated stone-working techniques. Buried Together, Remembered Together: The Ancient Cave That Is Rewriting Human Origins
Picture a cave in central Israel, 110,000 years ago. Two groups of beings, both deeply human in ways we are only beginning to understand, are moving through the same landscape. They are burying their dead in the same curled, foetal position. They are carrying red ochre from sources more than a hundred kilometres distant, selecting it carefully, heating it to deepen its colour. They are shaping stone using the same precise, considered technique. And they are learning from each other.
This is not imagination. It is archaeology. And it is asking us to revisit some of the most fundamental assumptions we hold about what it means to be human, and how human consciousness first began to take shape.
What the Cave Contained
Tinshemet Cave, set into a hillside in the Nahal Beit Arif valley, has been under excavation since 2017. What researchers found there, published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, has generated significant excitement in the scientific community, and for good reason.
The discoveries include:
- Five sets of human remains, two complete skeletons and three skulls, representing what appear to be the first formal burials of this era found anywhere in over fifty years
- More than 7,500 pieces of ochre in a striking range of colours: red, orange, brown, yellow, and purple, with the majority being vivid red or orange
- Stone tools crafted using a sophisticated, standardised method found consistently across multiple sites in the region
- Animal bones, placed deliberately alongside the human remains
- In one burial, a large piece of red ochre placed between the leg bones of the deceased
The cave sits roughly ten kilometres from another significant site called Nesher Ramla, where remains of a previously unknown human population have previously been found. The proximity, and the remarkable similarity in practices between the two sites, is not coincidental.
Two Kinds of Human, One Way of Honouring the Dead
What makes this find genuinely extraordinary is the question of who was doing the burying.
The Levant during the mid-Middle Palaeolithic was home to more than one human lineage. Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens, long imagined as separate evolutionary streams with little meaningful contact, were in fact sharing territory, sharing resources, and, the evidence now strongly suggests, sharing culture.
The centripetal Levallois technique used to make the stone tools at Tinshemet Cave is identical to that found at sites across the region, at Qafzeh and Skhul Caves, which held early Homo sapiens remains, and at sites associated with Neanderthals. The same method, appearing at the same time, across groups that mainstream narratives once kept firmly apart. The most parsimonious explanation is also the most compelling: they learned it from each other.
The burials tell an even more intimate story. Placing the body in a foetal position, surrounding it with meaningful objects, selecting pigment from distant sources and applying it with deliberate intention, these are not the acts of beings operating purely on instinct. These are the acts of beings who understood loss, who felt the weight of a death, who believed that something mattered enough to mark it carefully and permanently.
The question of whether Neanderthals had this kind of inner life has been fiercely debated for generations. Tinshemet Cave does not close that debate. But it adds evidence that is very difficult to set aside.
The Ochre Question
Of all the discoveries at Tinshemet, the ochre collection may carry the deepest resonance.
Over 7,500 pieces. Sourced from at least four distinct locations, some over a hundred kilometres away. Heated deliberately to intensify the colour. Red has held symbolic meaning in virtually every human culture across recorded history, from ritual body painting and sacred ceremony to the marking of boundaries and the honouring of ancestors. Its use here, in quantities that suggest sustained, organised, intentional collection over a long period, points toward a rich symbolic interior life.
This was not survival behaviour. Ochre does not feed you or protect you from predators. Travelling a hundred kilometres to collect a specific type of red-hued stone and then carefully heating it to make it more vivid serves one purpose only: meaning-making. The drive to create and participate in shared symbolic systems is one of the defining features of human consciousness as we understand it today.
And it was happening here, 110,000 years ago, among beings we have traditionally regarded as primitive.
A Crossroads, Not a Competition
The conventional narrative of early human prehistory has tended to frame the relationship between different human lineages as primarily competitive, a story of replacement, of one group superseding another through superior intelligence or adaptability.
What Tinshemet Cave adds to the growing body of alternative evidence is a picture of the ancient Levant as something more like a meeting place. A crossroads, as the researchers describe it, where different human populations encountered each other over generations, influenced each other’s technologies, mirrored each other’s rituals, and in doing so, collectively shaped the cultural capacities that we now regard as distinctively human.
“Human connections and population interactions have been fundamental in driving cultural and technological innovations throughout history,” said the lead researcher on the project.
The word “throughout history” deserves to sit with us for a moment. Not just in the last few thousand years of recorded civilisation. Throughout the entire arc of human presence on this planet. The capacity for connection, for learning across difference, for building shared meaning with those who are not quite like us, is not a recent development. It appears to be one of our oldest and most defining features.
What This Means for How We See Ourselves
There is something quietly radical about this discovery, not in its technical detail, but in what it implies about identity and belonging.
If the beings who came before us, across multiple lineages and vast stretches of time, consistently moved toward each other rather than away from each other, sharing knowledge, sharing grief, sharing symbolic language, then the idea of fundamental human separation begins to look less like a natural state and more like a very recent and very particular narrative we have learned.
The cave holds something older. Something that remembered, even then, that connection was the point.
