We want to believe that our leaders have our best interests at heart, that science will save us, and that if we all do the right thing, the storm will pass. During the Covid-19 pandemic, that sense of order and reassurance was symbolised by one simple message: “safe and effective.”

But what happens when the numbers tell a more complicated story?

New Zealand was hailed as a model of COVID management. Stringent lockdowns, closed borders, and one of the world’s highest rates of mRNA vaccine uptake. By the end of 2021, over 75% of Kiwis had received two doses. At that point, only 44 Covid-related deaths had been recorded since the pandemic began.

Yet fast-forward just six months—and the death toll surged to over 2,000. Today, it stands at more than 4,500. That means over 99% of New Zealand’s Covid deaths occurred after widespread vaccination.

Coincidence, Correlation, or Something Else?

Let’s be clear: correlation isn’t causation. Many factors may explain such a spike—relaxed restrictions, the arrival of new variants, waning immunity, or underreported cases in early stages. However, the sheer scale of the increase does raise questions that deserve honest discussion.

And New Zealand is not alone. Australia, with a nearly identical vaccine rollout, also experienced a sharp rise in Covid mortality following mass vaccination—though less extreme than New Zealand’s.

If these trends were isolated, they might be dismissed as anomalies. But we’re now seeing similar patterns echoed in other highly vaccinated populations.

Scientific Dissent or Dangerous Denial?

For much of 2021 and 2022, raising concerns about mRNA vaccine safety was taboo. Scientists, doctors, and members of the public who questioned the prevailing wisdom were labelled as conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers, or worse.

But time has a way of shifting the Overton window.

In 2025, one of Japan’s leading RNA scientists, Professor Yasufumi Murakami, warned of a possible link between repeat doses and increased mortality. His conclusion? “The more doses you get, the sooner you’re likely to die.”

That’s not clickbait—it’s based on a review of extensive population data.

Of course, not all scientists agree. But that’s the point of science: it evolves. And in a democratic society, scientific debate must be encouraged, not suppressed.

Quiet Reversals and Public Realisations

Even governments are beginning to walk back their once-firm positions.

In June 2025, Australia’s Department of Health revised its guidance, no longer recommending mRNA vaccines for healthy children and adolescents. Their reasoning? The “risk-benefit ratio” no longer justifies universal vaccination in that age group.

It’s a subtle but significant reversal of the stance that prevailed just a few years ago.

Then there’s the revelation that some health officials—those urging the public to get vaccinated—didn’t follow their own advice. One senior FDA figure admitted to avoiding the mRNA jab during pregnancy, while others distanced themselves from previously praised treatments like ivermectin.

What was once dismissed as disinformation is now being reconsidered. And what was once promoted with near-religious zeal is now being approached with caution.

It Was Never Just About Science

At the height of the pandemic, many decisions were made in the name of “the science.” But public health is never purely scientific. It’s political, psychological, and social.

Censorship on social media platforms was rampant. Journalists were silenced. Medical licences were threatened. All for expressing concerns that, today, no longer seem fringe.

What if the more honest thing to say would’ve been: “We’re doing our best, but we might get it wrong”?

Instead, the public was met with absolute certainty—and zero tolerance for dissent. That eroded trust more than any misinformation campaign ever could.

So Where Does This Leave Us?

The lessons from New Zealand, Australia, and elsewhere are not about blaming or shaming. They’re about reflection, accountability, and learning.

  • What role should governments play in shaping health decisions?

  • How do we ensure transparency and open dialogue, especially when science is still unfolding?

We now face the challenge of reconciling past decisions with present realities. That includes honouring those who suffered losses, validating those who raised early concerns, and rebuilding public trust in science and medicine.

It also means admitting that what we were told, and what actually happened, may not perfectly align.

A Healthier Future Requires Honest Conversations

There is no perfect path through a global crisis. Mistakes are inevitable. But when people feel silenced, ignored, or deceived, the wounds of that crisis last far longer than any virus.

The real question is no longer about whether certain policies worked or didn’t—it’s about how we treat each other when truth becomes uncomfortable.

Because moving forward doesn’t just mean preparing for the next pandemic—it means learning how to talk about the last one with compassion, courage, and care.
