What’s in Your Water? The Implications of Fluoride’s Toxicity Review

The debate over fluoride’s safety has been reignited as the long-delayed review by the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) on fluoride’s toxicity is set to be released to the public. After nearly a decade of legal battles, interventions, and controversies, the public will soon have access to critical information that could shape the future of water fluoridation policies worldwide.

The Road to Transparency

For years, the Fluoride Action Network, Food and Water Watch, and the Organic Consumers Association have been locked in a legal struggle with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to make this information public. The battle centres around the potential health risks of fluoride—a substance added to many water supplies to help prevent tooth decay. The core issue is whether fluoride’s benefits outweigh the possible risks, particularly regarding its effects on human health.

The decision to release the NTP’s findings follows a February 3rd meeting between the Fluoride Action Network and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the parent agency of the NTP. This meeting came after a subpoena was issued for the agency’s comments and documents related to the review, which had been delayed multiple times. As a result, the NTP monograph on fluoride’s toxicity and a related meta-analysis will be published on the NTP website by March 15th, just before the next court hearing scheduled for April 11th.

Behind the Delays

The delays in releasing the NTP’s review have not gone unnoticed, leading to accusations of interference from high-level officials. Internal emails obtained by Michael Connett of the Fluoride Action Network through Freedom of Information Act requests reveal that the review was put on hold due to intervention from Assistant Health Secretary Rachel Levine and National Institute of Health (NIH) Director Lawrence A. Tabak. These emails suggest that the NTP had finalised its findings and was prepared to publish them as early as May 2022, but was subsequently pressured to delay the release.

These revelations have fuelled concerns about the transparency and integrity of public health agencies. If the NTP’s findings indicate significant health risks associated with fluoride, the question arises: why was there an effort to delay or suppress the report? Critics argue that the interference may reflect an unwillingness to confront potential public health implications that could challenge longstanding water fluoridation practices.

Fluoride and Public Health: The Growing Evidence

While the controversy over fluoride is not new, recent studies have added weight to concerns about its safety. A study published in the Science of the Total Environment by scientists from York University in Toronto linked fluoride exposure to an increased risk of hypothyroidism in pregnant women. This is particularly troubling because hypothyroidism is known to cause brain-based disorders in children, raising questions about the safety of fluoride exposure during pregnancy.

As the public awaits the release of the NTP’s findings, this new study underscores the need for a thorough re-evaluation of fluoride’s role in public health. If the review confirms significant health risks, it could lead to sweeping changes in how fluoride is regulated and used, particularly in public water supplies.

A Turning Point in the Fluoride Debate?

The upcoming release of the NTP’s fluoride toxicity review marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over fluoride’s safety. It is a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in public health decision-making. As we move forward, it is crucial that the public has access to all the information necessary to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

Whether this marks the beginning of the end for water fluoridation or simply another chapter in a long-standing debate remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the release of these documents will have far-reaching implications for public health policy.
