The Vanishing Feast
As early members of the Homo genus increasingly relied on meat, large animals became the cornerstone of survival. These huge creatures offered something smaller animals could not: abundant fat. Humans could only process limited quantities of lean protein, but fat delivered pure, efficient energy. Hunting a giant animal meant sustenance for an entire community for weeks.
But these giants reproduced slowly and as human populations expanded, the balance tipped. Over the course of 1.5 million years, large animals dwindled until their once-rich landscapes turned sparse. A global transformation was underway, and humans stood at the centre of it.
The extinction of megafauna around 50,000 years ago coincided with something extraordinary. The Upper Palaeolithic Revolution spread across multiple continents. Art flourished. New tools emerged. A New Way of Thinking

As prey dwindled, so did the fortunes of our evolutionary cousins. Neanderthals and Denisovans had long shared Earth with us, but they relied heavily on large animals and used simpler toolkits. Without the agility necessary to catch small prey and lacking the diversity of behaviours that Homo sapiens developed, their populations shrank.
Neanderthals, physically robust but energetically cornered, struggled to adapt. Without access to enough fat-rich meat and without the precision hunting technologies that we had begun to master, they gradually faded until only one human lineage remained.
The First Great Partnership
The most surprising adaptation of this era may also be the most touching. As humans found themselves with surplus protein from smaller animals, wolves lingered at the edges of their campfires, drawn by the scent. Some were bold. Some were curious. Some were unusually tolerant.
In time, a tentative dance began. Humans needed help chasing nimble prey. Wolves were experts at it. Wolves needed consistent access to nutrient-rich food. Humans had it. The partnership offered mutual benefit:

As giant animals vanished, humans embraced plants more deeply, grinding seeds, foraging creatively and eventually cultivating the first crops. Agriculture emerged from necessity, reshaping society yet again. The world that followed was different in scale, rhythm and meaning.
The new theory by Ben-Dor and Barkai weaves these developments into a coherent narrative. It treats human evolution as an energetic puzzle, shaped not only by the animals we hunted but by the animals we welcomed into our lives.
