In recent years, electric vehicles (EVs) have been lauded as the future of sustainable transport. With promises of zero emissions and a cleaner environment, many governments and companies have pushed for a rapid shift to EVs, citing climate change as a major driver. Yet, as the world makes this transition, some concerning questions are surfacing. Are electric vehicles truly as safe and sustainable as we are being told? A striking example came to light with the Norwegian shipping company Havila’s decision to ban EVs from its ferries. This decision was driven by the tragic sinking of the ferry “Felicity Ace” last year. The cause? A fire onboard, sparked by the lithium-ion batteries in electric cars. The fire spread uncontrollably, and despite all efforts to extinguish it, the ship and its valuable cargo—luxury vehicles including Porsches, Bentleys, and Lamborghinis—sank into the Atlantic Ocean. The total loss was estimated at around $400 million.
This incident raises serious concerns about the safety of transporting EVs, especially on ferries and other large vessels. Traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, when involved in fires, can often be contained and extinguished with conventional methods. However, EV battery fires are different. They are extremely difficult to control due to the chemical reactions in the batteries, which can reignite repeatedly.
The Growing List of Incidents
The Felicity Ace tragedy wasn’t an isolated incident. Hurricane Ian, which devastated parts of Florida in 2022, revealed yet another risk linked to electric vehicles. After being submerged in floodwaters, numerous EVs caught fire—fires that were remarkably challenging to put out. First responders found themselves grappling with a new problem: EV batteries, once corroded or damaged, could ignite hours or even days after the initial flooding, presenting a significant hazard in disaster-stricken areas. This highlights the potential dangers when EVs are exposed to extreme weather conditions, particularly as climate change brings more severe storms.
Similarly, in 2022, California faced an unexpected issue. As a heatwave swept the state, the government urged EV owners not to charge their cars at peak times due to the strain on the state’s electrical grid. The irony? As more EVs are produced to combat climate change, the infrastructure supporting them—such as power grids—may not be able to keep pace, especially in areas where energy demands fluctuate wildly due to extreme weather.
The Hidden Costs of EV Technology
Beyond the immediate safety concerns, there are growing questions about the sustainability of EV technology itself. Many people assume that by driving electric, they are making a purely environmentally friendly choice. However, the reality is more complicated. Electric vehicle batteries are made from materials like lithium and cobalt, which are not only finite but also difficult to source sustainably. A report from Finland indicated that the world doesn’t have enough of these materials to replace the batteries of all EVs every 10 years, a stark contrast to the supposed infinite lifespan that many believe EVs offer.
On top of that, the issue of replacement batteries for EVs is already starting to rear its head. Take the case of an EV owner in rural Alaska, who was told it would take four years to receive a replacement battery for her Chevy Bolt. With no nearby dealers and a recall that affected over 140,000 Bolts, this owner was left stranded in more ways than one. What good is an electric vehicle when key parts like batteries are in such short supply?
Are We Ready for the Future of EVs?
There is no doubt that electric vehicles hold the potential to revolutionise the way we travel. But we can’t ignore the growing list of issues that accompany this shift. Whether it’s the safety risks associated with fires, the strain on infrastructure, or the environmental and logistical challenges posed by battery production and replacement, EVs are far from being a perfect solution.
As governments continue to mandate the production of more electric vehicles, and as more companies push for their adoption, it’s important to ask: Are we ready for this future? And at what cost are we pursuing this vision? Technology, after all, isn’t just about advancing—it’s also about ensuring the safety, reliability, and sustainability of that progress. For now, it seems, we still have some work to do to balance the promise of electric vehicles with the real-world risks they present.
