Why Automakers Are Pumping the Brakes on Electric Vehicles

In the early 2020s, electric vehicles (EVs) were hailed as the saviours of the environment, with ambitious goals set by automakers and governments alike. By 2030, many car manufacturers, like Volvo, promised to make their fleets fully electric. Fast forward to today, and that promise has started to crumble. Volvo, Ford, General Motors, and other big names have quietly backed away from their initial commitments, opting instead for a mix of gas, electric and hybrid vehicles.

While the EV hype was real, the technology and infrastructure haven’t caught up. One glaring issue is that EVs, for all their environmental appeal, still face many challenges that traditional petrol-powered vehicles don’t.

For starters, many consumers are hesitant. Although EV sales have grown, hybrids — cars that combine an electric motor with a petrol engine — have gained more traction. Hybrid vehicles offer the best of both worlds: increased fuel efficiency without the constant need to find a charging station. If you’re in a town powered by coal or fossil fuels, your “green” electric car is, ironically, still powered by non-renewable energy sources. It’s a reminder that moving to EVs without a comprehensive and sustainable energy transition doesn’t solve the core environmental problems.

Supply Chain Nightmares

Another major issue in the EV rollout is where the raw materials for batteries come from. The U.S. has ample resources, but mining efforts are often blocked by environmental lawsuits. Meanwhile, the bulk of lithium, cobalt, and other materials comes from places like the Congo, where mining conditions are often inhumane and dangerous.

So, what are we left with? A global supply chain that is not only unreliable but also unsustainable. While there’s a clear demand for more ethical and eco-friendly sourcing, the reality is that EV production is far from green.

The Hybrid Solution: The Best of Both Worlds?

Given these challenges, it’s no wonder that hybrid vehicles are gaining popularity. They provide a compromise: a smaller environmental footprint without the headaches of pure electric technology. Volvo’s push towards plug-in hybrids, however, is curious. Consumer Reports and other researchers have found that traditional hybrids (without a plug-in component) outperform plug-in hybrids. The latter, which require charging and refuelling, might end up offering the worst of both worlds — dependent on both a dwindling charging infrastructure and petrol.

The Broader Environmental Question

Finally, we must consider the broader environmental and social implications of a full EV transition. Researchers have warned that the push for EVs could actually deepen environmental inequities. Ironically, one solution proposed by climate activists is to move away from cars altogether. They suggest focusing on walkable cities, improved public transport, and bike-friendly infrastructure. While this vision of the future may appeal to some, it’s hard to imagine places like sprawling American cities adapting without significant upheaval. Or will they just be abandoned?

What’s Next?

The future of EVs, hybrids, and sustainable transport remains uncertain. As automakers pull back on their promises, and as governments struggle to meet infrastructure demands, it’s clear that the road to an electric future will be far bumpier than anticipated.

Perhaps it’s time we reevaluate what “going green” really means, taking a more nuanced and realistic approach to the future of transportation. After all, sustainability is more than just slapping a battery in a car.
