Imagine a future where a handful of individuals decide not just the direction of technology, but the direction of human thought itself. In their 2021 book The Age of AI: And Our Human Future, Henry Kissinger, Eric Schmidt and Daniel Huttenlocher sketch exactly that kind of trajectory—a world in which AI is not merely a tool, but a centre of authority. Their vision is ambitious and sobering: AI as a civilisational pivot, reshaping knowledge, agency, even identity.
But as new neuroscience research emerges, we now have glimpses of the more intimate risks: what happens inside our brains when we outsource thinking and creativity. These findings invite us to revisit the world those authors propose, and ask: will we become spectators to our own minds?
The Promise and Peril of The Age of AI
Kissinger, Schmidt, and Huttenlocher present AI as epochal—a force comparable to the printing press or the Enlightenment. They contend that the advance of machine intelligence is inevitable; resisting it is “to cede the future” to those bold enough to adopt it.
Their case is built upon concrete examples: DeepMind’s AlphaZero mastering games unaided; AI systems decoding complex protein structures; large language models producing surprisingly fluid prose. These successes become stepping stones in a narrative that AI will soon outpace human comprehension.
Yet critics argue that the book’s bold claims obscure deeper structural concerns. Meredith Whittaker and Lucy Suchman, for example, describe The Age of AI as advancing a political agenda by framing AI as inevitable and beyond critique. By rendering technology apolitical, the book sidelines debates about who controls data, whose values are embedded in algorithms, and how power is concentrated in platforms.
Still, the authors are not blind to dangers. They warn of an elite class that would define AI’s objectives—those who “program and develop AI”—versus a broader populace subject to its influence. They foresee an epoch where humans lose the capacity to reason in isolation, where decision-making is outsourced to algorithmic authority.
One of the most striking predictions is that AI might evolve into a quasi-religious system. If machines “see” realities beyond human perception, the authors suggest, society may incline to trust their judgments. In essence, faith might shift from divine authority to algorithmic oracle.
MIT’s Findings: When AI Dulls the Mind
While The Age of AI argues from a macro-geopolitical vantage, recent empirical studies give us a window into micro-scale consequences. A study by MIT’s Media Lab set up three experimental groups: individuals writing essays unaided, with Google search, or with ChatGPT assistance. Brain activity was monitored via EEG.
The results were striking. Users reliant on ChatGPT showed the lowest neural engagement in areas tied to memory, attention, executive control, and creativity. Over time, these participants increasingly “checked out” mentally, often copying or pasting text rather than constructing it.

The elite class in Schmidt and Kissinger’s vision may not need overt coercion if overreliance on AI has already hollowed the public’s capacity for critique or decision. If people cannot discern AI’s influence, they may unwittingly become participants in their own cognitive erosion.
There is danger in treating AI as inevitable or neutral. Its behaviour is shaped by human choices—about which data to include, which objectives to optimise, which values to prioritise. The Age of AI often skirts these debates, assuming inevitability rather than contestability.
We cannot regard AI simply as a force of nature. The narrative of inevitability disempowers dissent. We must treat AI design as a political, ethical, and cultural field.
Toward Resistance: Maintaining Creative Agency
If we accept that AI will expand, and that cognitive atrophy is a real risk, what path forward remains?
1. Establish personal red lines.
Decide in advance which tasks you will never outsource: creative writing, composing music, critical reflection, problem analysis. Use AI as assistive, not primary, agent.
2. Cultivate mental resistance.
Just like muscles atrophy without use, mental capacities fade without challenge. Write, calculate, reason—especially when it’s uncomfortable.
3. Educate for literacy, not blind usage.
We need public literacy in how AI works: model limitations, bias, hallucination. Citizens must understand who builds models, what data they rely on, and where decisions are opaque.
4. Democratise AI governance.
Decide not only what AI can do, but who governs its purpose, validation, and accountability. Resist the notion that a technocratic elite should define our future.
5. Cherish creative acts as spiritual practice.
Art, storytelling, instrument playing—these are not mere hobbies. They are expressions of self, vessels of meaning. They keep us grounded in what distinguishes human experience.
The Li-Fire Age: Fracture and Renewal
Beyond the frameworks of politics, neuroscience, and technology lies another lens through which to view our present moment. In numerological wisdom, this period is known as the Li-Fire age, a 20-year cycle where humanity is said to experience both fracturing and the potential for profound renewal.

This perspective reminds us that decline and renewal often travel together. Even as AI threatens to erode certain capacities, the Li-Fire age offers a window to cultivate resilience. By choosing to create—through art, story, music, or innovation—we fan the flames of human spirit rather than allowing them to be smothered by convenience and passivity.
The challenge, then, is not only technological but cultural and spiritual. The Li-Fire age asks each of us: will we allow the fire to consume us, or will we tend it as a beacon for renewal?
